Investigative Report

Here is a story idea for an investigative piece on City Colleges of Chicago:

The City Colleges of Chicago are two year institutions that once the requirements are met, you can either receive an associates degree or a certification from a program that you completed.
The unique thing about the city colleges is the student newspaper. There are seven city colleges. They are Kennedy-King, Richard Daley, Harry Truman, Malcolm X, Harold Washington and Wilbur Wright and Olive Harvey. Out of the seven colleges, only five have papers. The UpTown Exchange Truman College, Malcolm Xpress, Harold Washington The Herald, Diversity Wright College. As of 2007, Kennedy-King has a journalism concentration as well. Daley and Olive Harvey do not have a student paper.
The only difference with City Colleges of Chicago student paper compared to the university paper is that, at a the city colleges you can write on the paper and receive a 1 credit hour. This is a trade off because the paper is funded by the school. So therefore you do not get paid to do it. At the universities they students are typically paid for their work on the paper. That is because the school is not funding the newspaper. Also the City Colleges of Chicago school’s paper are monthly editions.
Their papers look like any other college or university paper. They have articles that reflect the things that are going on or around campus. They also feature articles about the community that is around the college.
The social issue that will be presented is that the city colleges can be a great start for anyone who wants to go and continue their education, for those whom do not have the money to go away to the four year universities right after high school.
The main purpose of the of this investigation is to take an in-depth look at the inner workings of a City Colleges of Chicago student newspaper. The investigation will look at the education and training that the students are receiving and will it all so prepare them to be able make the transition from a two year school with a monthly publication to a four year school with a daily publication.
The documents that will be examined are copies of the school news papers. The issue will go back as far as five years to make sure that an accurate decision can be made. The records as far as how many students actually enroll into the journalism classes the college has to offer each semester.
These documents should be located in the newsroom of each college. If not then they should be located on the school’s website there should be links to the newspaper own site, if they have one.
The only ethical concerns that might come into question is that I am a citizen of Chicago. So one could argue that I might be bias towards the schools. Though, one can report a story about a structure that is a part of the city that they were born and raised.
The people that would be interviewed would be current staff of the paper, the current faculty advisor. Then once that is done, if possible to be able to track down the former staff of the paper. The kinds of questions that would be asked would be: are you still wanting to be in the journalism business? What were your experiences like at working for the paper? Do you feel like the experiences that you received at the paper prepared you to be able to transfer to an four year university and want to continue your education in journalism. Then if there was anything that you could have changed while working for the paper what would it be and why? If the faculty advisor is not the same one from the previous school year track them down and asked them about their qualifications to be an advisor for the school paper? Does this person have a background in journalism in some shape or form? If so, ask them what part do they like the most preparing future journalist to go out and gather news or gather the news themselves?
Also someone in admissions would be interviewed about a enrollment of the college at a giving time. Then asked about the enrollment of the journalism class that are in session. A student advisor would have to be interviewed to find out exactly how do the go about helping students select the journalism classes.
Since not all of the seven city colleges do not have newspapers contacted world have to be made to the main office of the city colleges to find out what happened to the papers, or were there every any papers to began with at the two schools in questioned Olive Harvey and Richard Daley.
The locations that would be visited would be all of the colleges and their newsrooms. Also a trip would have to be made to the head quarters of the city colleges to talk to someone about the funding for the papers.
The FOIA request that would be made are about the funding for the city colleges newspapers, if the head quarters offices are not willing to allow me to have access to that information. All so whatever is in public records would be looked at to see if it would be helpful to what is being investigated about the city colleges. Yet, the FOIA would be a last choice if no one is willing to cooperate with the reporter.
The photographs that would be used in the story would be images of the city colleges, such as the logos. The photographer should be willing to go and take photos of the newsrooms at each of the colleges that have papers.
The way that the story would be presented would be in a six part series. Each school that has their own paper would have their own story that will focus on them and the paper. Then the two schools that do not have a paper will be combined into one story that focuses on why they do not have paper and the funding issues.
The people that would be contacted are the people that are involved in the stories. They would asked how they felt about the finished product.
